7th Annual Heroes and Legends “Splash of Red” Gala Raised More Than $250,000 In Support Of Homeless Youth!
On behalf of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary youth in Safe House, Avenue 15 and Haven’s Way, we would like to thank the Heroes and Legends Committee, the Glencoe Club, event sponsors, guests and donors. The generosity of all involved was overwhelming and brought in more than $250,000 to support the youth in our programs, totaling close to $1 Million since the first Heroes and Legends event in 2004.
Saturday, November 12th saw nearly 300 guests dressed in ‘black and white with a splash of red’ for the 7th annual gala. The event started out with a bang as event emcee Richard Bartrem, Vice-President, Communications and Community Relations for WestJet, pulled out two tickets to any WestJet Airlines destination and asked everyone to put their hands on their ‘heads or tails’ for a chance to win!
The enjoyment continued as skilled Glencoe Club staff brought out the delicious meal prepared by the Chef and culinary team. Each course featured a splash of red in honour of the event. Guests also wound around the multiple silent auction items, with the excitement of the chance to bid on their favourites, and competed in friendly competition over the seven extraordinary live auction packages. Thank you to auctioneers, Chuck Christensen, Dean Cockburn and John Lowry with “A” Team Auction Source for providing a fun auction experience to all guests.
Comfort and Care Packages equip youth and young adults with necessary supplies to continue on their life journey to self-sufficient adulthood. The opportunity to support youth in homeless situations had guests giving generously, raising more than $9000 for the purchase of these packages. One such youth was the evening’s guest speaker Jenifer Renaud, a former alumni of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary homeless youth programs. Jenifer spoke of her determination to change her life of abuse to one of empowerment and self-confidence. “The staff at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary became family and enabled me to make better choices in my life. I was able to get off the streets, finish high school and attend Mount Royal University in the Social Work program. I am proud to say, my mom is now my best friend.”
Due to the generous support of the Heroes and Legends Committee, the Glencoe Club, event sponsors, guests and donors, we continue to provide optimism and encouragement to the children and youth in Calgary.
